Everything you need to know
before you go.
Common questions about planning a Belize trip with The Local Root Belize — from booking and deposits to what to bring, weather, diving, and more.
Booking & Planning
For individual tours and excursions, 7–14 days in advance is usually sufficient. For high season travel (December through April), popular excursions like the Blue Hole or private charters book out quickly — 3–4 weeks is safer. For a full custom itinerary or Signature Journey, we recommend reaching out 4–6 weeks before arrival so we have time to build the right plan, confirm availability, and handle all logistics before you land.
Start by filling in our contact form or sending us an email with your travel dates, group details, and experience interests. We'll come back within one business day with recommendations or questions. Once we've agreed on the right plan, we'll send confirmation details, payment instructions, and everything you need to prepare for each experience.
Initial recommendations and planning conversations are complimentary. For full custom itinerary planning — particularly multi-week trips or high-complexity itineraries — a planning fee may apply. We will always be transparent about this upfront before beginning any paid work.
Cancellation terms vary by experience type and lead time. In general, cancellations made 72 hours or more before a scheduled excursion are eligible for a full refund or rescheduling. Cancellations within 48 hours may incur a fee. Weather-related cancellations initiated by us will always result in a full refund or a complimentary reschedule. Specific terms will be included in your booking confirmation.
Experiences & Tours
Most of our experiences are private — meaning the boat, guide, or captain is exclusively for your group. This allows us to customize the pace, stops, and experience around your preferences. For certain shared-format experiences (like some mainland day trips), we'll clearly indicate that in advance. Private experiences typically provide a significantly better day on the water or in the jungle.
It depends on the experience. Discover Scuba Diving is designed for non-certified guests and requires no prior experience. Standard reef dives require at least an Open Water certification. The Great Blue Hole requires Advanced Open Water plus logged dives at depth. Always share your certification level and any logged dives when booking so we can match you to the right experience.
Yes — many of our experiences pair naturally into full days. A morning reef dive followed by a snorkel and beach lunch, or a fishing trip that ends with a cook-up and swim, for example. Tell us how you want the day to feel and we'll suggest combinations that work with the tides, light, and logistics.
Weather & Logistics
We monitor conditions closely and will proactively reach out if we believe an experience is unsafe or will be significantly compromised by weather. In those cases, we will offer a full reschedule or refund. Belize has generally excellent weather from November through May. The wet season (June–October) brings more variability, but most mornings are still excellent for water activities.
For reef and water days: reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard or lightweight long-sleeve top, sunglasses with a strap, a dry bag or waterproof phone case, water, a hat, and a light change of clothes. For snorkeling: your own mask if you prefer it (equipment is provided). For scuba: your certification card and logbook. Specific packing notes will be included with your booking confirmation.
We can coordinate ground transfers, water taxis, and domestic flights as part of a full itinerary plan. For individual excursions, most departures are from docks on Ambergris Caye and we will provide clear instructions on where to meet. For mainland adventures, transport from the island is typically included or clearly detailed in your confirmation materials.
